It ships compressed, and the fill has to re-loft. Straight out of the bag it will be visibly thinner than the specification; shake it, lay it flat, and give it two days before deciding. A short tumble on no heat speeds it up.
Does it need a sheet over it?
Yes — put your fitted sheet over the topper, not under it. That also means adding roughly two inches to the mattress depth your fitted sheet has to clear, which is worth checking before the sheet fights you.
