Twelve dollars, faux shag fur, and the cheapest calming bed on the shelf

The same donut principle as the round pet bed, executed in a different fabric and at an even lower price — this starts at twelve and a half dollars, which makes it the cheapest bed in the catalogue and one of the cheapest sensible ones anywhere. What you get for that is a nest-walled bed filled with high-loft down alternative, the raised rim giving head and neck support rather than just enclosure, and a faux shag pile that is doing a deliberate impression of a mother’s coat.

Twenty inches across, just under two pounds, and six colourways including two that appear nowhere else in the range: a rainbow and a tie-dye coffee. The deep crevices in the shag are the whole textural argument here — an animal kneads and burrows into pile like this in a way it does not with a flat cut pile. There are no zips at all, so the entire bed goes in the machine on gentle, and the listing is explicit that you should dry it properly to stop the pile matting. The manufacturer publishes a sizing table across 20, 24 and 30-inch beds against pet weights of fifteen, twenty-five and forty-five pounds.
Best for: cats, kittens and small dogs; nervous animals; and second and third beds, because at this price you can put one in every room the animal actually uses.

What the score is measuring
Eight thousand ratings at 4.6 puts this level with the round bed on average and behind it on sample — both are large enough to trust. On shag pile specifically the recurring complaint is matting, and that is very largely a drying problem rather than a manufacturing one: a bed left to air-dry damp mats, a bed tumbled on low does not. The number is high because most owners follow the instruction, and the ones who did not are in the tail.
The score and the count are the retailer’s public totals as of our last catalogue check and both move; the shelf position is counted from the 5 products we carry in Pet Beds & Houses, not from the retailer’s ranking.
Common questions
How is this different from the round pet bed?
Fabric and price. This is faux shag with deep crevices and starts around twelve dollars in one size; the round bed is cut pile, comes in two sizes and eleven colours, and costs a few dollars more. Both are donut beds with the same intent.
Will it survive a dog that digs?
Shag pile takes kneading well — that is what it is for. Sustained digging with claws is a different matter, and no plush bed at this price is claw-proof. For a determined digger the elevated cot is the more durable answer.
What weight of animal fits the 20-inch?
The manufacturer suggests up to fifteen pounds, and that is about right for a curled animal. Above that, look for the 24-inch, which the same guidance rates to twenty-five pounds.
